Louis Wain was fond of painting cats, and did so throughout his life. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and placed in a psychiatric institution where he produced many odd and somewhat abstract paintings of cats. At the time the paintings were used to describe his descent into mental infirmity, but none of the paintings were dated so can not serve as a measure of his changing mental state. It is also theorized he suffered of aspergers syndrome and visual agnosia rather than schizophrenia.
